One of the main jobs of anyone doing SEO at more than a basic level is to figure out what has to be done. Figure out what works. "Causation" is a fancy term math geeks use to say the same thing: what works?
Then there are the things we observe that are usually present wherever there are high rankings. But they don't actually cause the rankings. These are said to be correlated. Understanding the difference between the two is essential to figuring out what works.
